Video Ad Production Cost in India: A Realistic Breakdown

What a product ad film actually costs, line by line — and where budgets get wasted on things audiences never notice.

Production quotes vary by a factor of fifty for what sounds like the same brief. Here is what actually drives the number.

Broad ranges by ad type

Ad typeTypical rangeTimeline
Product video, studio, no talent₹15,000–60,0003–7 days
Product ad film with model₹50,000–2.5 lakh2–3 weeks
Brand film, location, small crew₹2.5–8 lakh3–4 weeks
Full TVC, celebrity, multi-location₹15 lakh–2 crore+6–12 weeks

Where the money goes

Pre-production (10–20%). Concept, script, storyboard, casting, location recce. Skipping this is the most expensive saving available — it is where mistakes are cheap to fix.

Talent (0–60%). Anywhere from nothing for a product-only film to the majority of the budget for a celebrity shoot.

Crew and equipment (25–40%). Director, DOP, camera, lighting, sound, assistants. Rates scale with crew seniority and shoot days.

Location and art (5–25%). Studio hire is predictable. Real locations bring permissions, travel and unpredictability.

Post-production (15–30%). Edit, colour, sound design, music licensing, graphics, and versioning for each platform.

Versioning. Often forgotten and always needed. One film becomes a 30-second TV cut, a 15-second pre-roll, a 9:16 Reel, a 6-second bumper and a silent captioned version for feed. Ask for versioning in the original quote.

The three biggest budget wasters

Shoot days. Every additional day multiplies crew, equipment and location cost. Ruthless pre-production planning collapses two days into one more often than people expect.

Over-specified equipment. Audiences watching a 9:16 Reel on a mid-range Android over 4G cannot tell which cinema camera you used. Spend on lighting and sound, which are visible, not on sensor prestige, which is not.

Weak scripts, rescued in post. No amount of colour grading fixes an idea that was not working on the page.

What ₹50,000 realistically buys

A single studio day, one product, a small crew, clean lighting, and a set of cutdowns for Meta and YouTube. No celebrity, no location, minimal art. For a D2C brand launching a product, that is often enough to start testing creative and let performance data decide where to spend more.

What to ask for in a quote

Insist on a line-item quote, not a lump sum. It should separate pre-production, talent, crew, equipment, location, post and versioning. A lump sum hides where your money is going and makes it impossible to trade one line against another.
