Who Is on a Brand Film Crew, and What They Do
Director, DOP, gaffer, line producer, stylist. What each one is responsible for on an Indian brand film, and which roles a small shoot can do without.

Read a shoot budget for the first time and it looks like forty people you did not ask for. Most of them are there for a reason, and knowing which does what is the difference between approving a quote and guessing at one.
The people who decide how it looks
- Director. Owns the interpretation — performance, pace, what the film is actually saying. On a brand film they answer to the script and the brief, not to their own showreel.
- Director of Photography (DOP). Owns the image: lenses, lighting design, camera movement. If you are unhappy with how a film feels, you are usually unhappy with a DOP decision.
- Production designer / art director. Owns everything in frame that is not a person — the set, the props, the surfaces. On a product film this role carries more weight than brands expect.
- Stylist, hair and make-up. Owns how the talent reads on camera. Budgeted per day, per person, and easy to under-resource.
The people who make the day happen
- Producer. Owns the money and the commitments, and is who you argue with.
- Line producer. Owns the schedule and the logistics — permissions, locations, vehicles, food, the thing that broke. The single most useful person on a difficult shoot.
- Assistant directors. Run the floor and keep the day to the call sheet. The first AD is why a twelve-hour day finishes in twelve hours.
- Production assistants. The reason nobody senior is out buying gaffer tape at 2 p.m.
The technical crew
- Gaffer and electricians rig and run the lighting the DOP designed. A gaffer is not a spare electrician.
- Focus puller keeps the lens sharp on a moving subject. On a shallow-depth product shot this is the difference between usable and unusable.
- Grip handles rigs, dollies and anything the camera sits on that is not a tripod.
- Sound recordist captures usable audio on location. Skippable only if you are certain the whole film is voiceover and music — and brands are often wrong about that.
- DIT / data wrangler backs up the cards during the day. Cutting this role is how footage gets lost.
What a small shoot can genuinely drop
For a single-day product film on a controlled set, the honest minimum is a director who can also handle the camera or a DOP who can direct, one AD, a gaffer, a stylist if people are on screen, and somebody backing up data. Art direction can collapse into the director's job if the set is simple.
What does not survive being dropped: data backup, and permissions. The first loses the shoot after the fact; the second loses it on the day.
Reading this on a quote
Crew is usually the second-largest line after talent, and it scales with days, not with ambition — which is why cutting a shoot from three days to two saves more than cutting the shot list. Our breakdown of video ad production costs in India sets out how the rest of the budget divides.
