Instagram Reels Ads for D2C Brands: A Practical Setup
Vertical, sound-on, hook in two seconds. What actually converts for Indian D2C brands on Reels.

Reels is where most Indian D2C growth budget goes now. Most of it is spent on creative built for a different format.
Format non-negotiables
9:16, full bleed. A repurposed 16:9 film with bars is an immediate scroll.
Hook in the first two seconds. Not your logo. Not a slow establishing shot. The problem, the product, or a visual that stops the thumb.
Sound-on, but legible silent. Many users watch with sound. Many do not. Burned-in captions are not optional, and they need to be readable on a small screen.
Under 20 seconds for cold audiences. Longer works for retargeting, where interest already exists.
Creative structures that work
Problem → product → proof. The most reliable structure for D2C. Show the frustration, introduce the product, show the result.
Unboxing or first-use. Works especially well for products where physical quality is a purchase driver — apparel, jewellery, packaged food.
Before and after. Powerful in beauty, home care and fitness. Be careful with claims; ASCI expects substantiation for anything implying a result.
Creator talking to camera. The highest-trust format and often the cheapest to produce.
Budget structure for a first campaign
Start with three to five creative variants and a modest daily budget. Give the algorithm 3–5 days before judging — early data is noisy. Kill anything below half the account average on cost per result, and put the freed budget behind the leader.
The variable that matters most is creative, not targeting. Brands that test ten creatives against broad targeting consistently outperform brands that test ten audiences against one creative.
What to measure
Cost per purchase or cost per qualified lead, not cost per click and not engagement. Engagement on a Reels ad is a weak signal of commercial performance — plenty of highly engaging ads sell nothing.
Track thumb-stop rate (3-second views over impressions) as a creative diagnostic. If it is low, the hook is the problem. If it is high but conversion is low, the offer or landing page is the problem.
Creative fatigue is faster than you think
Reels creative fatigues quickly, often within two to three weeks at meaningful spend. Plan a content pipeline, not a one-off shoot. This is precisely why creator rosters work better than single productions — twenty creators produce twenty pieces of refreshable creative.
